Sanjeev Puri, chairman of cigarette-to-consumer goods group ITC, also weighed in on the ongoing 90-hour work week debate. Puri said in a recent interview that rather than the number of hours, it’s important for employees to align with the company’s grand vision.
This comment of his L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanian’s comments came amid heated debate, saying that workers should work 90 hours a week.
“If you ask a mason what he is doing, he may say that he is laying a brick, another may say that he is building a wall, but another may say that he is building a castle. This is the perspective that workers should have,” he explained. PTI in an interview.
Asked if that meant they wouldn’t put in the hours, Puri said: “We won’t.”
Additionally, Puri explained that it is important to empower employees with the company’s vision and goal.
“We use a part of the vision and want to contribute to making the vision a reality. And we do that through our processes, through the resources we provide, through the freedom of action we provide, through the Enable vitality through empowerment, which are very distinct and very clear goals for individuals to achieve, and those are the primary things we look at.”
To make matters worse, Subramanian said he regretted not being able to get the workers to work on Sundays. An unidentified video in which the chairman can be heard making these comments has gone viral on social media.
He also questioned the need for workers to spend time at home. “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you look at your wife, and how long can a wife look at her husband.”
Commenting on the viral video, Puri said: “I know there has been a lot of debate on him (Subrahmanian), but I tell you what philosophy you look at it.”
