Samsung starts making refrigerators for thermoelectric nerds

Samsung now New hybrid cooling technology announced Coming to its refrigerators in 2025. They will use a conventional compressor with a new Peltier module – a semiconductor device that transfers heat from one side to the other when current passes through it. According to Samsung, this approach results in a refrigerator that reduces temperature variations and makes better use of interior space to keep food fresher for longer.

Samsung says the Peltier module is called into action only when significant cooling is required. This could be after loading the weekly grocery haul into the fridge or adding hot leftovers. In these conditions the Peltier module works with the compressor to avoid a large internal temperature rise. Otherwise, the refrigerator depends exclusively on the compressor for optimal cooling efficiency. Samsung says its hybrid cooling technology will be introduced in a refrigerator (model RM80F23VM) that “could be recognized as the most efficient of Energy Star in 2025.”

Featuring the new hybrid cooling technology, Samsung’s refrigerators will be available with a 900-litre capacity. The company says that using Peltier modules instead of conventional heating elements has resulted in a 25-litre increase in usable interior space. And according to Samsung, its hybrid cooling can keep food fresher for longer, with tests showing pork 1.4 times longer and salmon 1.2 times longer.

Expect to hear more from Samsung about its hybrid cooling refrigerators in early January when the big CES trade show kicks off in Las Vegas.
