Ann’s lawsuit alleges that Sam abused her from 1997 to 2006, when Ann was three and Sam was 12, and continued until Sam became a legal adult. The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Missouri, says Ann suffered “severe emotional distress” and was unable to lead a “normal life” as a result of Sam’s alleged abuse.

An attorney for Ann described the Altman family’s statement as “an attempt to distract from their loss.” Attorney, Ryan J. Mahoney said sexual abuse can lead to “mental health consequences such as, persistent PTSD, depression and anxiety.” He also specifically said of Ann that “there is no evidence that her own mental health contributed to her convictions.”

The Altman family’s statement alleges that Ann made conspiratorial claims about various family members over the years and demanded money from them. Family members say they have offered financial support and asked her to seek medical help but she “refuses conventional treatment.”

“This situation is deeply saddening to our entire family,” the family’s statement said. The family say they have “chosen not to respond publicly” when Ann has made such claims in the past, but they feel “we have no choice but to address this”. Now that he has filed a lawsuit.
