Cars with Android Automotive are about to get many more apps

Google is all set to launch its Android Automotive App conversion program This February that helps developers turn their Android apps into in-vehicle screens.

As reported by Android AuthorityThe “Car Ready Mobile Apps Program” guides Android developers to make minor changes to apps so that they are available in vehicles with the Google Play Store in the dash.

To begin with, Google is specifically looking for streaming entertainment, gaming, and browser apps, and they need compatibility with x86 processors since many cars aren’t using ARM chips.

However, the compatibility mode option can get many apps working in Android Automotive even without following all the guidelines. Google had said that this in-car app would create an easier path for approval last may during its I/O 2024 developer conference.

Some Android automotive vehicles such as the Lincoln Nautilus already have a growing number of Google Play Store apps. We reviewed in September. It has games like angry BirdsStreaming apps like Max and Crunchy Roll, and meeting apps like WebEx that run similarly to their Android tablet versions.

However, the selection is still slim overall, with mainly car-related apps like Waze and a better route planner making the list. Come February, expect many more apps to arrive in the Dash.
