Feeling unsure about what style of career you need? Here is a brief overview of the types of baby carriers to give you a better idea of how they differ.
Structured Career: These are your standard baby carriers with shoulder straps, a waist belt, and a supportive pouch for the baby to sit in. The best thing about these is their adaptability to the size of the child, as they often fit until the child is 35 pounds or more. , and for all the positions your baby may want to be in during those early months. They are a bit larger and heavier, however, compared to light carriers.
Rap Carrier: These are used for babywearing, with a long wrap of fabric tied around your body and baby. We found them comfortable and breathable, but they are less secure and supportive, and really easy to use when baby is very young. However, it can be a good, affordable solution for children who just want to be carried or held by you. It may have more of a learning curve to get the wraps right.
Ring Slings: These are similar to wrap carriers, but use a single ring to secure baby in the hip or inward-facing position. They are lightweight and breathable, but have a definite learning curve and feel a little less secure than a structured carrier. They have more positions than a wrap carrier, though, and are easier to throw in a bag.
Baby carriers: Toddlers can fit into many structured carriers, depending on your toddler’s weight and size. But because toddlers are mobile, they often aren’t as happy to be strapped to your chest as they were as a baby (I know, I’m sad too). Toddler hip carriers and seats are options, where you strap on a lap belt with a little seat for your baby to sit on.
